Read the associated chapters, articles and watch the associated films/sitcoms. Each screening has a set of questions that relate to cultural stereotypes in the media. Respond to all the questions within your four page paper.

Latin American Culture in Media
Read the articles entitled “Latinos and Cinema Latinos and Hollywood Film” and “Latinos Work to Change Stereotypes in Hollywood”
View the film “Fools Rush In”
1. Identify any stereotypes that you may have noticed throughout the film. Consider, are all cultural stereotypes necessarily negative?
2. Are these stereotypes common in media for the Latin American Culture? Do you think Latin American portrayal in the media has evolved? If so, how?
3. What do you think of Isabel?
4. What do you think of Alex and Isabel’s relationship? Do you think lots of couples in America experience this fusion of cultures and do you think the director did a good job in emulating it through this film?
5. What do you think of Alex’s parents? And what do you think of Isabel’s parents?
6. What do you think of Isabel Fuentes? Do you think she is a typical Mexican American woman or has her character been exaggerated?

1. Identify any stereotypes that you may have noticed throughout the film whether it be in regards to Latin American Culture or another culture.
2. Jennifer Lopez is portraying a woman of Italian decent, why do you think she would choose a role like this?
3. How do you think other Latin Americans feel about Lopez’ portrayal?
4. Do you think the story of The Wedding Planner could have been told to include a Latin woman?
5. Can you think of another film or actor where a character (in that film) was portrayed in another culture other than that actor’s own culture?
6. Can you think of other cultures where it might be easy to pass as Caucasian on film or in person?

4. Do you think we are teaching children how to stereotype?
5. Based on the Daily News article, what do you think of Mattel’s choice to evolve Dora?
6. Can you think of any similar children’s programs that might have stereotypes?

Read the article entitled “Racing in America: Fact or Fiction”.
View the film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”
1. Identify any stereotypes that you may have noticed throughout thefilm. Consider, are all cultural stereotypes necessarily negative?
2. Are these stereotypes common in media for the Greek Culture? Do you think Greek portrayal in the media has evolved? If so, how?
3. Do you think the portrayal of Greek Culture was over exaggerated in this film?
4. What do you think of Toula Portokalos? What do you think of her relationship with Ian Miller?
5. Do you think Toula is ashamed of her culture in the beginning of the film? Or do you just think she’s embarrassed by her family?
