Then find an example of a cultural artifact that conveys a form of cultural hegemony that celebrates or normalizes oppression (Cops tv show, wife-beater shirts, violence against women in the media, music lyrics, all-lives matter, confederate flag, statues, memorials, animal products, pollution, etc.). Describe this cultural artifact and the hegemonic cultural norms and values this artifact represents. How did your example achieve popular “consent”? How were the attitudes represented in your example normalized? What role does the “culture industry” play in normalizing the dominate culture? Next, describe how counterhegemony has pushed back against the dominate culture. What sorts or images, language, symbols, etc. are used to counter the dominate hegemony represented in your artifact? Can the same “culture industry” be used to counter the dominate hegemony? Why or why not?
