Human Security – Sovereignty Paradox
Instructions
If de jure sovereignty (i.e., equality of states, territorial integrity, political independence/non- interference) is the foundation of post-WWII international society established by the UN Charter, why and how since the late 1940s has the international community also tried to establish foundational rules about human rights, human security, responsibility to protect, and sustainable development which may seem to challenge state sovereignty? Use specific events/cases and employ at least three different theories that might help you explain this ongoing paradox at the heart of international relations.
