Instructions
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS II
SUMMER 2019-DR. J. SMITH
Guidelines for Research Literary Analysis
Important due dates:
• Rough draft and writing workshop-THURSDAY, JUNE 13 by 11:59pm (to post your rough draft, at least 60% complete, in the discussion thread); SUNDAY, JUNE 16 by 11:59pm (to post feedback to a classmate)-20 points
• Final draft-TUESDAY, JUNE 18 (submitted online via Canvas and Turnitin by 11:59pm EST)-180 points
Assignment:
You are required to write an essay based on your assigned readings from our anthology. The final draft should be 1,300 to 1,500 words in length.
For this assignment, you are required to write a literary analysis essay that delves into one aspect of an assigned work(s) in order to offer a unique interpretation of the story(ies).
You may decide to explore how an author uses various literary devices (such as characterization, plot, setting, an unreliable narrator, allegory, a foil, etc.) to convey meaning. Choose a topic that interests you-perhaps one that we discussed in class that you would like to find out more about.
This assignment is extremely open-ended.
Because this is a research paper, you are required to use five outside sources (in addition to your anthology/textbook). All of these sources are to be accessed through the SCF library (either in books or as academic journal articles). You should use the research that you conducted for the annotated bibliography as the basis for your research for this essay. Please note that you should not use non-academic sources such as Wikipedia, study sites (eNotes, SparkNotes, etc.), or stand-alone websites. These sources will not count.
Also, since you will be using direct quotes from the anthology and each of your outside sources in this essay, you must correctly cite these quotes within the text and include the short story (or stories) on your Works Cited page. Please contact your instructor if you need help with MLA format and guidelines (eighth edition). Your Works Cited page will have at least six sources listed for full credit (five library sources plus the anthology). You will need to use each source at least once within in your paper as a direct quote, summary, or paraphrase.
Format: Both the final version and rough draft must be typed and formatted according to MLA guidelines. Please use 1” margins and 12 pt. font (Times New Roman or Ariel preferred). Double-space your work and make sure to include your name, course number and date on all work. All other work can be hand-written, as long as it is legible and neat.

Pick one of the following stories for the assignment:
“The Cask of Amontillado” “Araby” “A Good Man is Hard to Find” “Hills Like White Elephants” “The Story of an Hour”
