Lecture Activity 8
For this step we are going to focus on the Fallacy Handout downloadpdf. You will have noticed that the fallacies reading was more of a list of definitions of fallacies, and this is where we are going to put our understanding of fallacies and the definitions provided to work. I would like for you to identify 3 fallacies on the sheet, any three that you choose, and identify an example of that fallacy at work across the mass media. To complete this assignment some students may find one text that shows all three fallacies at work. Others, may find three different texts showing one different fallacy at work within each one. Either is acceptable for this activity. Additionally, by mass media, I mean a communication message that has or is intended to have widespread viewership. This can be television, movies, digital marketing advertisement, billboards, advertisements on Hulu, etc. I want your focus to be identifying persuasive messages/requests built using a fallacy for an argument intended to influence a wide audience. Keep in mind all you’ve learned from large mediated messaging from Cialdini in the previous modules. We are building on our ability to analyze persuasion and/or coercion through the use of fallacies in this assignment.
