Instructions on paper:
Each paper will be 5-6 pages long (12 pt. font, double-spaced). In each of these papers, students will be required to analyze the ways in which literature and film attempt to cope with the various topics covered in the course (Catastrophe, Endurance/Survival, Responsibility, Resistance, and Memory).

Analyze the nature of the medium and its relation to one of the themes we are discussing. What problems or opportunities does the topic present for the mediums of literature and film? What can you do in literature that you cannot in film (or vice versa) to address this topic? Is one medium better than the other in addressing it? Is either medium sufficient in addressing the topic or problem? In this essay you will have to consider how literature and film present different formal or technical possibilities and limitations that may alter both the nature of the treatment (language, style, tone, technique, voice, imagery, etc.) and its analysis of the key problems of the topic.
