Diverse Perspective Assignment
Diverse Perspectives Assignment: This assignment aims to introduce you to the value of learning from diverse perspectives on biblical interpretation.
Choose two chapters from chs. 13–19 of Scripture and Its Interpretation to read that represent different interpretive perspectives from your own. These chapters will give you a broader introduction to the nature of these interpretive perspectives and their potential contributions to the understanding of the Bible.
In order to experience the concrete value these perspectives can provide for your own interpretation, you will find one example of academic interpretation (journal article or book) from one of those two perspectives on one of the biblical texts you plan to study in your exegesis paper. (Potential resources include: Blount, True to Our Native Land; Patte, Global Bible Commentary, Adeyemo, Africa Bible Commentary; Page, The Africana Bible; Pope-Levison and Levison, Return to Babel; Segovia and Tolbert, Reading from This Place).
Consult one modern, Western, non-confessional commentary on the same text. (Potential commentaries include: Word Biblical Commentary, Interpretation, Anchor Bible Commentary, International Critical Commentary, The New Interpreter’s Bible Commentary, Hermeneia.)
Write a (1.5 spaced) paper, 1000–1500 words long, reflecting on what new insight the diverse perspective provides into the meaning of the text, while critically analyzing both interpretations. The research and writing you do for this paper can be incorporated into your exegesis paper (below).
Come to class prepared to discuss your work.
