Imagine you are a nonfiction writer workshopping a book project on the biographies of James Baldwin and Kendrick Lamar. You are interested in writing about the lives of Baldwin and Lamar in a manner that is informed by critical race theory, gender studies, and class-based analysis. Currently, you are pitching your project in a book proposal to Verso Books, an independent publisher known for its reach into both popular and academic audiences. In a 4-6 page book proposal, provide the publisher with three specific examples each from the biographies of James Baldwin and Kendrick Lamar that represent the development of one aspect of their social identities. In addition, for each example chosen, apply one theory of diversity that best helps analyze the example’s significance to Baldwin and Lamar’s life stories. Because you are interested in displaying the breadth of your knowledge on critical race, gender, and class theory, the social identity aspect chosen for Baldwin should be different than the aspect chosen for Lamar (meaning, if you cover Baldwin’s racial identity, your section on Lamar should focus on either his gender, class, or sexual identity). Be sure to include an explanation in your own words for each term or concept cited from our theories of diversity. A total of at least 4 different theories of diversity are required in your book proposal. Your essay will be assessed on both the quality and breadth of your examples as well as your comprehension and application of diversity theory.
Biographical resources: James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time; Raoul Peck, I am Not Your Negro; Kendrick Lamar, DAMN.
Theories of diversity: critical race theory (racism is ordinary; racism benefits the dominant group; social construction thesis; differential racialization; intersectionality; anti-essentialism; unique voice of color; or other terms discussed in Delgado and Stefancic); gender theory; class theory
Assessment: biographical examples, 40% (30% quality; 10% breadth); theories of diversity, 50% (20% comprehension; 30% application); meeting assignment parameters, 10%.
