argumentessay

: For your third essay, you will re-read “Our
Unhealthy Obsession with Sickness” by Frank Furedi (page 460) and respond to it in a wellformed argument. Do you agree or disagree with Furedi’s take on illness – how we view it and
how we treat it? Choose from a topic below and write out a strong argumentative thesis
statement. Once you have your main idea figured out, do some research to help back your point
up.
– Should the government be involved in health education and care? Write out an
argument either for or against government involvement in health care.
– Should psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress be treated like
diseases?
– Do you agree with Furedi that we are too obsessed with illness? That wellness is more
uncommon than illness? What should be done to rectify this obsession? If you disagree,
make an argument defending the growth of illness in society and how it should be
normalized, respected, and/or treated.
Introduction paragraph – Remember that your introduction must grab your readers’ attention
and present a clear thesis. It introduces the main topic and leads into the main idea of your essay.
Your thesis statement should come at the end of the introduction paragraph and should be no
longer than 1-2 sentences. Please underline the thesis statement in your essay.
Body paragraphs – Each of your body paragraphs should have a topic sentence that directly
reflects and develops your thesis statement. Each paragraph in the body of your essay should
develop one portion of your thesis statement. Always double check that your body paragraphs’
topic sentences directly match up with your thesis statement. If they don’t, something needs to be
edited or changed. Please underline your topic sentences.
Conclusion – Write a conclusion that restates your thesis statement (in different words) and
wraps up your essay. Your conclusion should be a whole paragraph. Please underline the restated
thesis in your conclusion.
Research: Remember that you must come up with a strong main idea first and then use outside
sources to back up your point. If you rely too heavily on sources to get your point across, your
paper will be flooded with quotes and paraphrases and will mute your voice as the writer.
– You must use 3-6 outside sources for your essay. Note that I WILL NOT accept sources
such as Wikipedia or the Webster’s Dictionary. You must use the FCC library database for
your research. Please use periodical databases such as EBSCOhost, JSTOR, and Proquest.
They will provide reliable and helpful resources for your paper.
– There are many resources available to you for help with research. It’s your responsibility to
take initiative and get in touch with the library for assistance. If possible, call the library and
set up a one-on-one RAP session with a librarian. They can help you with your specific topic
