Analysis

In The Handmaid’s Tale, the Commander justifies Gilead’s reorganization of society by explaining: “All we’ve done is return things to Nature’s norm.” For this prompt, pick two works (one of them may be The Handmaid’s Tale) and write a paper that analyzes the way the authors use “nature” to discuss or demonstrate something about gender. Questions to consider include: Do the authors use “nature” as the Commander does? Do they use it to mean something different? How does each author define “nature?” How does “nature” work in their text conceptually or thematically? What does “nature” reveal about men and/or women?

– Readings to choose from are The Yellow Wallpaper or The Mad Woman in the Attic by Gilbert and Gubar
