A sociological perspective of current events
Write a 2-3 page analysis (no more than 3 pages) about a social action event in a local community that
aims to solve a social problem and better the community. You may select an article and/or video that
details the social situation and the citizen response. Select an event that has occurred in the United
States within the last couple of years (2013 – 2018). The article must be from a major source, such as
The Washington Post, The New York Times, Baltimore Sun, Time Magazine, U.S. News & World Report,
The Nation, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic among others. The article can be found online or in print.
You may want to run the article/video by me first before proceeding with this assignment.
The objective of this assignment is to provide students with the ability to apply sociological perspectives
to real-world situations, particularly social activism.
This paper must be typed and submitted as a hardcopy. Attach the original or a photocopy of the article
to your paper.
Prepare to present your paper in class.
The paper and the presentation should meet the following criteria.
I. Background (½ page):
a. Briefly, describe the social event or situation presented in the article by answering the following
questions:
i. What is the event?
ii. Who was involved?
iii. Where did the event occur?
iv. When did the event happen?
v. What data or statistics help to describe the situation?
b. When you describe the event, do not plagiarize – describe in your own words!
c. Make sure you include a well-developed thesis statement which informs the reader in one sentence
what your paper is about. The thesis should be placed at the end of the background section. Go to this

II. Assessment (1 ½ pages): This is the core of your paper. Make sure this section is very welldeveloped, well-organized, and well-written since your grade depends mainly on your sociological
analysis of the article.
1. Discuss why the event or situation occurred by relating it to a total of three sociological concepts and/or
theories learned from any of the chapters in the textbook. For example, you may choose to use a combination
