A Displaced Factory Worker In The Late 1970s
You have been assigned this journal, and here are some tips that may help you.
First, remember that you are writing from the perspective of a factory worker who has lost his or her job due to the economic downturn of the 1970s and the failure of some American businesses to produce the products that people wanted to buy (think of the auto workers in Detroit, for example).
Just as you are the sum of all you’ve experienced during your life, your journal persona should also be considered as the sum of what he or she has lived through and you can show that by using your knowledge of what happened to the expectations of the middle class in the United States since the end of World War II.
You only have two to three pages for this, so you will need to be concise, but the goal here is to show us that you have thought broadly and considered all the factors that might go into the attitudes and emotions of a factory worker in the “rust belt” of the United States.
You are not to do any outside research for this journal assignment. It will waste your time and will not help your grade. You have all the information you need from the text reading, the documentaries, and the class lectures.
How to submit: the due date for this is the end of the day on Friday, May 3. You should submit your journal entry on our Blackboard Course Content page by clicking the link that says “Journal” and then clicking the box that says “write submission.” You can then paste your carefully proofread journal there.
