For your first writing project, you are tasked with writing a literary analysis about one of the readings from Unit 1. The purpose of this writing project is to let you apply what you have learned about elements of literature. they work as a whole). Your paper should be between 600 and 900 words (two-to-three typed, double-spaced pages). You may choose between “The Most Dangerous Game” and “The Jade Peony” for your analysis.
Your analysis should include discussion of the plot as defined in Freytag’s triangle. Identify and explain exposition, inciting action, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Trace the course of the conflict in the story, noting any additional conflicts that occur. Identify the protagonist(s) and the antagonist(s), and explain the nature of the conflict.
Analyze the main characters in the story. Are they flat or round, and are they dynamic or static? Explain why, and note how the author characterizes the characters. Are these characterizations carried out in direct or indirect ways, and how so?
Your paper will be worth 100 points, and it will be worth 10 percent of your course grade. The essay will be graded according to the following criteria:
⦁ Identification of the elements of plot (15 points possible)
⦁ Explanation of how one element of plot leads to the next (15 points possible)
⦁ Summary of the conflict (15 points possible)
⦁ Discussion of the relationship between the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) (15 points possible)
⦁ Analysis of main characters (15 points possible)
⦁ Correct use of paragraph form (15 points possible)
⦁ Correct use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and all direct quotations cited in MLA Style (refer to the “Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics Handbook” section on pages R24–R28 of your textbook and the writing guidelines in the Appendix of this course). (10 points possible)
