Ways that gender is socially constructed
For this exercise you should go to either a toy store or a store that sells greeting cards. If you choose to analyze greeting cards, look at cards for new parents, and see what differences there are between the cards for male babies and female babies. If you choose to analyze toys, look at the differences between the toys in the boys and girls sections of the store. Take notes as you analyze the toys/cards. What are the messages given to boys and girls about how they should act, or the activities they should participate in? be sure to answer the following questions. What patterns do you notice? Are there many differences? By drawing on the textbook and the article by West and Zimmerman, explain how these objects help explain how we “do gender.” What messages do these objects give us about the position or role of men in women in society? You should look at a minimum of ten toys/cards (five for boys and five for girls).
