Video Analysis Interview #1
Information and Instructions:
- Worth 25 points (12.5% of your overall grade).
- Up to 3 pages maximum; single-spaced; 12-point font
- Find a 5-15min. legitimate interview on YouTube, list link at the top of your paper.
- Provide a brief description of the interview (i.e. who, when, why). If you use the description listed on YouTube, cite it appropriately with quotation marks.
- Using 5 DIFFERENT concepts (e.g. non-verbal, verbal, abstraction ladder, etc.) identify no less than 10 observations in the interview.
- List those 10(10+) observations using 2 bullet-points per observation.
- In the first bullet point list: Time of observation in the video (in minutes); Description of what was observed (i.e. what was seen and/or what was heard); A brief sentence stating the concept represented in the observation (e.g. verbal, non-verbal, etc.) and the likely meaning.
- In the second bullet point list: A sentence or two on the intentionality and effectiveness of the behavior. A sentence or two on the impact of this behavior on the overall interview (e.g. did this behavior change the course of the interview?).

Interview with Gayle King and R. Kelly (CBS This Morning, 2019): After being indicted for a second time for sexual abuse, R. Kelly (best known for writing and performing R&B music) agreed to an interview with Gayle King with the intent to clear his name and tell his story. https://youtu.be/pafJHx–o21k
- 0:00-0:47 Gayle’s’ questions: “Why are you sitting down with us today? What are the lies that you are hearing that disturb you the most? Have you done anything that you regret? Have you broken any laws when it comes to women? Example of Funneling. The questions begin as non-threatening and general, then ends with a very specific question.
- The form of questioning was intentional as it is used frequently in interviewing. It was effective as Robert appeared comfortable at the beginning of the interview.
- 3:41Roberts verbal response: “Absolutely” and his Non-Verbal Response: shaking his head ‘no.’ This is an example of discrepancy between verbal and non-verbal, which is an indicator of lying.
- This non-verbal behavior was unintentional and ineffective. Especially when there is a discrepancy, non-verbal behavior is usually more truthful. It appears this behavior was one of the turning points of the interview, from his calm demeanor to being irate.
- 6:10 Robert avoids making eye contact with Gayle. This is a non-verbal indicator of ignoring or avoiding her by visually keeping her out of his sight.
- It appears this behavior was intentional as he continued to avoid eye contact as Gayle moved physically closer. This behavior was somewhat effective as Robert continued to ignore her questions. However, this behavior did not put Robert in the best light overall.
