Vaccinations (Both sides of the argument and what fallacies are often used)
NOTE: Use of a style format (MLA or APA) is required for this essay. Please don’t lose points by ignoring this requirement.
The purpose of the final essay is for you to demonstrate the course’s learning outcomes. Learning outcomes are simply what students can be expected to learn over the course of a semester. For example, a learning outcome for a math class might be that you are able to solve a certain kind of problem. Our learning outcomes in Critical Thinking are:
Ability to evaluate and integrate Information from multiple perspectives.
Gathers relevant situational information from a variety of perspectives and reputable sources.
Interprets information effectively relative to the problem; distinguishes between fact and opinion; detects bias.
Synthesizes and integrates multiple perspectives
Ability to apply principles of critical thinking to a range of real world problems
Constructs well-reasoned conclusions and solutions
Demonstrates knowledge of common fallacies by not committing them and by identifying them in the work of others
Your final essay should be a 3-4 page (minimum) investigative essay that identifies and explores competing arguments on a topic of your choice.
To get an A, be sure to:
Select a topic you find personally interesting
Identify more than one line of argument related to your topic (ie, competing perspectives about your topic; two is fine).
Present and evaluate those arguments from multiple sources carefully and critically
Are there weak premises to the arguments? Fallacies?
Reach a general conclusion based on your evaluation of the arguments you encountered (and be sure to cite your sources throughout)
As with the midterm, grades will be assigned based entirely on a set rubric:
40 points – Presentation and evaluation of the arguments/perspectives you encountered/quality of information sources
40 points – A conclusion that demonstrates good critical thinking skills
10 points – Readability of essay (quality of prose, spelling/grammar)
10 points – Proper MLA or APA formatting of essay
