The War of 1898
answer the following question:
“What did the War of 1898 represent for the United States?”
We came out a colonial power. Look at the territories we got from Spain, and how that inspired the concept of manifest destiny, and our station in the world.
This question can mean different things to different people, so you may focus on the larger question above, one of the many small questions below, or more than one question related to this event:
Why did the United States enter a war between Spain and its colonized peoples? What did the war mean to Americans?
Why did America fight Spain?
Why did America ‘liberate’ Cuba?
Money and land.
Why did America ‘keep’ Cuba?
How did America see itself?
How did America and Americans see Cuba and Cubans? Did America and Americans really wish to free Cuba?
Did America and Americans seek economic gain and profit?
America viewed Cuba as underdeveloped and needing help.
Using the 1898 sources, you are to create an historical analysis grounded in statements and images from the period. If you argue that America and Americans believed themselves to be liberators and realized their goals, you need to use the sources to show this. If you believe America was an imperialist power seeing an economic opportunity, you need to show this through the sources.
I believe they did think they were liberators but Cuba didn’t want/need them. Also I think the other question to.
Requirements
1) 4-5 Pages. No more. No less. This means 4-5 pages of YOUR writing. No subheadings, no opening 4 lines with your name and date. Put your name and page number in the header, and that will be sufficient. I will count the title line, but that is it. Interesting titles are enjoyable.
2) No spaces between paragraphs.
3) Times New Roman, 12-pt. font, double-spaced.
4) 1-inch margins (top, bottom, left, and right).
5) You HAVE TO USE Slide 6. If you do not, your grade will be dropped by a full-letter grade.

6) You HAVE TO USE the Teller Amendment. If you do not, your grade will be dropped by a full-letter grade.
7) You HAVE TO USE the Platt Amendment. If you do not, your grade will be dropped by a full-letter grade.
8) 13 sources have to be used AT THE LEAST. When you use a source, you need to provide a citation. Because many of you have different styles for citations, all I require is a small parenthetical citation after the quote or reference – (Q19) for citing Quote 19; (I14) for citing Image 14.
Use APA citations.
If you do NOT use the sources, you will receive a ‘0.’
USE THE SOURCES! REFER TO THEM! QUOTE THEM! INTEGRATE THEM! An argument is built upon sources. Here they are. USE THE SOURCES.
Because I have assigned you to use Image 6, the Teller Amendment, and the Platt Amendment, this means you need AT LEAST 10 more sources.
-No Wikipedia
9) You start with a brief introduction of no more than 4 sentences which sets up the issues you have chosen to address. The point of the introduction is to prepare the reader for the rest of the paper. Therefore, you need to state explicitly in the introduction what you will argue in the rest of the paper. This is called a thesis statement.
10) You end with a brief conclusion of no more than 4 sentences which summarizes your analysis. The point of the conclusion is to remind the reader of your argument.
11) The rest of the paper is your argument. Built upon the sources, the rest of the paper is your analysis. This is what matters most. This is why I read the paper. This is why you write the paper.
