The Tell-Tale Heart

The Tell-Tale Heart” is a classic Edgar Allan Poe short story. It was first published in the January 1843 issue of a periodical called The Pioneer. The story offers a 1st person account of a grisly murder that curiously centers around an old man’s “pale blue eye.” The unnamed narrator asks, “How, then, am I mad? Hearken! And observe how healthily—how calmly I can tell you the whole story” (290). Based upon the brief background lecture that I provided about the short story genre, share an initial post with your classmates about the ways that you see Poe’s story fitting either the Wilfred Stone or the Austin Wright definition of the short story. Besides the connections you make with either definition, share with thWhy do you think it continues to resonate with readers after so many years?e class what you think makes this story so memorable.  Include at least one quote from the short story to develop your commentary.

Your post should be a minimum of 400 words for this first week. While I am not requiring you to respond to your classmates’ posts, I encourage you to read their commentary and offer feedback. This post will be worth 5 points and count towards your Journal / DF grade. If it’s posted on time (by midnight on 8/28), responds to the specific prompt directives, and avoids plagiarism, it will receive full credit.

Reminder: Do not consult sources like SparkNotes, Cliffnotes, Wikipedia, etc. While these sources may seem like a quick way to understand a short story, they cannot substitute for the value gained by reading the work.
