The Merchant of Venice Play Analysis

Description: Read or watch Merchant of Venice and consider the historical relativity of the play before writing an analysis of the story.

Analysis should be a critical look at the play from the viewpoint of the question below. The paper should include examples from the play.

To serve as a brief guide, I’d like you to discuss the following topics in your paper:

Can we rationalize away the anti-Semitism the play as a “product of a time”?
Can modern productions of the play approach the material in the same way previous generations used to?

While these analyses are intended for you to express your own thoughts and opinions, examples from the play should be used to reinforce those thoughts and opinions. This is considered a formal writing assignment and as such, grammar and spelling will be taken into account for grading.
