Summary/Precis

Read and annotate the article. Pay attention to headings. Define terms. Take copious notes!
2. Reflect on the author’s argument and purpose.
3. Consider the evidence carefully.
4. Write the main idea(s) of the article into a single well-developed sentence. This is a thesis
statement that should capture what the entire text is trying to achieve.
5. Write a one or two sentence summary of each section or subargument of the article.
6. Read the article again and compare it to your initial notes.
7. Begin writing the précis. Include full citation for the article at the top using the Chicago
Manual of the Style format (see your syllabus). Use the thesis and additional summary
sentences as the outline. Fill in supporting evidence.
8. Review the précis to ensure it clearly communicates the author’s main point, its supporting
evidence, and logical structure (introduction, body, conclusion).
9. Check for grammar and spellings. Clarity, coherence, and correctness should shine through!
10. PROOFREAD! Self-edit your papers before submission.
How long is a précis?
A précis is quite short. For each reading, write 2 pages (no less but no more)
Dos and Don’ts
• Do write in proper English.
• Do write in third person.
• Do use present tense when discussing the author’s point (ex. Grabar argues…).
• Do not extensively quote the author unless you are using a specific definition. If you do
quote, you must do it correctly.
• Do not include your opinions, interpretations, or ideas.
• Do write concisely and precisely.
