Steps to follow for Coding:
1. Review the ‘Coding Data Fact Sheet’.
2. Read through transcripts
3. Identify at least 4 topic categories/themes that the quotes are related to. An example codebook is as follows:
4. Create a table with your 4 code/category/theme/ headings as columns and copy the quotes and paste as rows underneath.
5.
o Copy and paste the quotes into their corresponding code(s)/categor(ies)/theme(s) column(s).
o If you find a quote/response that is relevant to more than one category/theme, copy/paste into multiple columns.
6. Include at least 5 quotes per category/theme.
7. Disregard any quotes/responses that don’t fit under your categories/themes.
8. Create one pie chart to show frequency of quotes/responses from one category/theme based on the identity of the quoted participant(s).
9. Create one graph to show frequency of quotes/responses from a different category/theme based on the identity of the quoted participant(s).
10. Write a 2 paragraph narrative explaining your findings. Some questions to guide you:
o Is there any correlation between identity and the quotes in the categories?
o Which categories or themes seem to be the areas most prominent?
o Explain something that was surprising or interesting from the quotes/responses.
