Post 1 by: Johanna; Unit 1 Discussion 1 – Roles of Advanced Practitioners (I only need a half of page response)
This article utilizes historical information as well as relevant documents and landmark legislation to describe how the road was paved for the necessity and regulation of advanced practice nurses today. The role of a nurse practitioner was established in the 1960s, however, the need for such a role presented itself long before then. One documented example of this need dates as far back as the 1890s when a graduate nurse named Lillian Wald created the Henry Street Settlement in Manhattan in order to provide medical care to poor immigrants, as well as providing necessities such as ice, milk, medicine, and food. Lillian and her colleague Mary Brewster also made referrals to physicians and hospitals. This population was immense with a tremendous need for services and care with severely inadequate resources to provide them (Keeling, 2015).
In the early 1900s the role of what a nurse could do legally started to be questioned resulting in the 1903 state nursing registration act, which states that “Nothing contained in this act shall be considered as conferring any authority to practice medicine or to undertake the treatment or cure of disease.” (Article XII, 1903). This article did help to protect nurses but still did not provide any specific role guidelines and left much to be interpreted. The nurse role has been redefined many times over history leading to the eventual establishment of the advanced practice nurse role in the 1960s in order to meet the immense demand for quality trained medical professionals to provide care to underserved communities (Keeling, 2015).
