Reasons for No Universal Coverage/ Nurse Leadership in Public Policy

Question 1: Reasons for No Universal Coverage

The reading and lecture for this week discuss the frequent attempts to establish a universal healthcare system in the United States.  There are several explanations for the consistent failure of policy makers’ attempts to secure universal health care, including American individualism, anti-communist sentiment, the power of special interest groups, and mistrust of government.  Which of these do you think is/are the main reasons for our lack of universal health care?  Are there other reasons that I have not listed?  Be specific when explaining your answer.

Question 2-Nurse Leadership in Public Policy

Two of the readings this week explore the leadership roles of nurses in policy making.  They demonstrate the great need for increased involvement by nurses in the policy arena and some successes that nurses have already achieved in this realm.  Because leadership is very personal and can take many forms, I would like you to identify and comment on two points from the readings that stood out to you or that you think are particularly insightful or inspiring.  If possible, connect these points with other ideas/thoughts that you have developed through the course.
