Police Homicide

Paper details

The purpose of this paper is to use two theories to explain the type of killing that occurred in a single case.  You will need to pick a single offender that engaged in a type of homicide described in your text (for a full list see bottom of page).  In order to write this type of paper, you will need to find much biographical information about the offender.  The focus of the paper should be on the social circumstances (explained in most theories) rather than the nature of the crime.  You can use documentaries or news clips, newspapers, or books as sources of information for the offender.

Title Page (ASA Style)

Abstract (2nd page)
Brief summary of paper (purpose of paper, major findings, and implications).

Section I.  Introduction (no heading for this section: 1-2 pages)
Briefly describe the incident/crime that you are using as an example of the type of offending in your paper. Describe in detail the scope and trends in the type of violence/homicide that was committed in your case.  Ensure that you include statistical information about the national statistics that describe the scope of the problem.  Provide statistics about the number and types of cases that match the case you are using for your analysis.  The introduction section should end with the thesis statement/ purpose for the paper.
(Use academic journal articles or government publications/statistical information available on the web as sources for this section.)

The last sentence of this section should be the thesis statement (or research question) for your paper.

Section II.  Case Study.  (5 pages)
a. Describe in detail what happened in your case.  In your description of the incident, be sure to discuss in depth biographical information about the offender.
b. Provide a detailed analysis of two competing theories of crime that explain the factors that led to the homicide that took place in your case.
1.) First describe one theory in detail (1-2 paragraphs), and then provide evidence from you case that supports or contradicts that theory.
2.) Then, describe the second theory in detail (1-2 paragraphs) and next provide details from your case that supports or contradicts that theory.
(You can use newspaper, internet new sources, books, etc. to find information about the offender.  You can use this ebook available through the FPU library to select two criminological theories for your analysis.

Section Iii.  Discussion (1-2 pages)
In this section you need to briefly summarize how well each theory was able to explain the crime that took place in your case, based on your analysis  identify criminal justice practices that need to be supported, modified or investigated in order to prevent or reduce the likelihood of this type of homicide from occurring in the future.

References (1-2 pages)
The reference list and the in-text citations should be in ASA format. References are single spaced in hanging paragraphs; the list is double spaced.
