“Sonny’s Blues” & “Everyday Use”
We all have families. Nevertheless, not all families act the same way. For instance, some families may be very united, as some may be distant. However, the family will always be family. As an example, we can take the two different families that are present in the book “Literature” by JK. The first family comes from the history, “Sonny’s Blues,” by James Baldwin, this story describes the life of two bothers. One of them is an algebra teacher in high school and has an integrated, and organized life, and family. In contrast, his brother Sonny has a disorganized life, and he is addicted to drugs. In like manner, the second family comes from the story “Everyday Use,” by Alice Walker. It is a story narrated by a mother about the relationship with her two daughters, Dee, and Maggie. Dee is well-educated and keeps a relationship with a man. And her life seems to be formed. And, Maggie who got burned when she was a child because her house burned down. As a result of the burns on his body, she is a little bit jealous of her sister Dee. In other words, Two families can have similarities and differences at the same time.
Some people think that the older brothers or sisters are more responsible than the younger ones. And, most of the time this is true, as the older brothers are more thoughtful. For instance, Sonny’s older brother is successful, he has a wife and a few children of which one died. However, he keeps a good job as an Algebra teacher and seems to be in the right way. He is a responsible person who promised his mother to take care of Sonny if anything happens to her. As an example, his mother states “and don’t let him fall, no matter what it looks like is happening to him and no matter how evil you gets with him. You going to be evil with him many times. But don’t you forget what I told you, you hear?” (234). This shows that his mother told him to take the responsibility of taking care of Sonny because he would be the best candidate as his big brother and the only family that Sonny has. As a matter of fact, after she died he took care of sonny who was a complicated boy and was addicted to drugs. Sonny’s older brother tried to understand Sonny in order to get him help by asking him, what does he like, and what he does not like. In the second place, we can talk about Maggie’s older sister, Dee from the story “Everyday Use” as an example. Dee has the advantage of being well educated as she went to school. As Dee’s mother states, “But that was before we raised the money, the church and me to send her to Augusta school” (314). In this citation, we can see how her mother talks about how hard she worked to give Dee and education. Dee has a perfect life, relationship, and education. Unlike her sister who did not have the same opportunities as her. With that being said, we can state that the older brothers and sisters can be more organized with their life. From another point of view, the mothers take care of the younger son or daughter more than the older ones because they do not have experience in li
