Music evaluation

Instructions

1. Select a song from the 1980s. Your choice does not matter, but it must have been created in the 1980s.

2. In order to avoid repetition, inform the professor of your chosen piece of music as soon as you can. You will not be allowed to present on a song that has already been chosen. Should you have trouble deciding, a list of worthwhile songs will be posted by the professor.

3. Present your chosen song to the class, along with a presentation that explains its connection to U.S. history. When is the piece from? Who is the artist? What does this work of culture tell us about the 1980s? If there is a video, does the video alter our understanding of the song? Presentations must be between 7 and 10 minutes long, not including the length of the song.

4. Hand in a short paper (500 words) that analyzes the song and discusses the questions above. The paper is due at the time of your presentation.

Schedule

Starting in Week Two, at least one student will present during each class period. Inform the professor of your preferred presentation date.
