Many of the artworks and the architecture of the Southwestern United States and Mexico encompasses the legacy of Pre-Hispanic cultures forged together with a European inheritance to create a something very visually unique.

The Spanish conquistadors and later colonial administrations (not just Spanish) wreaked havoc and destruction on the indigenous populations’ social structure, by disease, starvation, control of resources including land, forced religious conversion, slavery and the destruction of native architecture, infrastructure and artworks. All of these legacies are part of the identity of all the Americas and are part of the character of much of American art.
