Mansfield Park

This assignment will not follow the usual format: please do not try to use a “5 paragraph” template for it. Indeed, your paper should also not begin with a “thesis.” The assignment’s purpose is rather for you to engage one of the discussion threads more deeply and to develop it in relation to Austen’s craft in Mansfield Park.

Your task is to discuss one of the discussion topics by discussing the following question:

Which of your peers’ discussion thread posts most changed your own initial response to the question, and how. How did it help you become a better reader of the novel?

Your introduction should elaborate on your own initial response to the topic before introducing your peer’s response.

In the body of your essay, in addition to elaborating on your peer’s response and supporting what you say about it from the text, you should also think about how to apply and develop your insight into other parts of the novel.

Note: you must refer to your peers by name, and you are encouraged to use the first-person “I.”

Length: Originally I left this blank because I think that things should be as short or long as they need to be. I don’t want to read stuff that you don’t want to write, and telling you to write 1000 words when you only have 200 to say means 800 words that didn’t want to be there. Still, you deserve guidelines. So I would say that 750 words would be an appropriate length. Lower than 500 is not acceptable; more than 1000 will make me grumpy. I care more about your quotation use than almost anything else for this assignment. Quote your peer, and then look around in the text and quote some words that you see differently — and tell your reader what to see in these words!
