MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP THEORIES DISCUSSION – Examine the difference between leadership and management theory
Instructions
In Week One you completed an Annotated Bibliography addressing 3 distinct management theories and 3 distinct leadership theories. That research will serve as the foundation for your final project, but it also serves as the foundation for this discussion.
Too often people confuse the terms management and leadership. Yet, there is a clear distinction between management and leadership. In short, leadership is one of the four functions of management. Therefore, one cannot be a good manager without being a leader as well (but, you can in turn be a leader without having the formal authority of a manager). Also, managers tend to use positional power whereas leaders use personal power. This terminology dates back to the studies of French & Raven (1959) where they discussed types of power people hold over others. Here, positional power relates to Legitimate, Reward and Coercive, while Personal relates to Expert and Referent (see the article below). A few years later they added Informational power.
