Learning Activity: due 11:59 pm ET, Saturday
Background: A young, opposite sex couple living in Washington, D.C. recently sought legal counsel with Attorney Carter because they want to get married without the knowledge of their families. Both are 15 years old, and the young woman is approximately 10 weeks pregnant.
Carter asks you to conduct research an answer to the couple’s question before her next meeting with them.
Instructions:
1. Identify Washington, D.C. by name and its abbreviation in Bluebook format.
TIP: If you have access to The Bluebook, refer to Table T12, or, .1 or Table T3 in The Indigo Book: An Open and Compatible Implementation of A Uniform System of Citation, refer to Table T3.
2. Analyze whether the couple can obtain a civil marriage license in Washington, D.C. without their families’ knowledge and explain conclusion in detail.
Clearly states and directly answers the legal question correctly;
Identifies the relevant legal rule (a primary authority) and cites it in Bluebook format.
Describes the relevant legal rule in plain English for the reader who may be unfamiliar with that law; and
Shows how the relevant rule applies to the legally significant facts of the clients’ case, leading to the predicted outcome
TIP: You may want to use IRAC to organize your response. Last week’s CALI lesson (refer to Overview) covered IRAC, but as a refresher, remember that an IRAC analysis and response:
Label all parts of response.
Write in correct, complete sentences in paragraph format.
Use size 12 Arial or Times Roman font.
