The spread of Islam and Christianity in Africa: how did these religions spread? Who was responsible for that spread? How did Africans react to the spread of Christianity and Islam? What kinds of transformations occurred in African societies as a result of these religions? How did Africans themselves contribute to these two religions?
African civilizations in Southern Africa: characteristics of the societies and their economies; connections with other parts of Africa and the world.
The Islamic slave trade: how it operated; how slaves were acquired (where and how); where African slaves ended up; how one could become enslaved; what Islam had to say about enslaving people and about slavery in general
Africans in the Muslim world and Europe: (look at Gomez and Northrop here): the African diaspora – its causes and characteristics; how Africans were perceived in the Muslim world and in Europe
Contact between Europeans and Africans in the 15th century: focus on the growing presence of Europeans (by that I mean the Portuguese) in coastal areas in West and East Africa in the 15th century, the nature of that presence, and how Africans interacted with the Europeans.
you will be asked to answer 2 questions from a variety of questions that have to do with the themes above. I will ask you to write 2 essays – one for each question.
