DISCUSSION
Research in the healthcare system is what drives innovations, techniques and skills. It is what causes policies to change and may even change rules or techniques that have been there for 100 years if there is proper evidence. Most healthcare systems now use evidence based practice because it is what has proven to save lives. Florence Nightingale was the original pioneer for nurses and evidenced based practice (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2016). She started something that has evolved and is constantly changing medicine (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2016). Evidence based practice uses evidence that has been gathered in many places and by many people and is unprejudiced against the way things were done and the people who created them (Karl & Mion, 2019). It is a just system that has allowed for many healthcare changes that have saved patients lives. Since evidence based practice is so prevalent in healthcare it is very important that nursing students learn early and often of it’s importance (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2016) . There are many different ways to conduct research and many different ways to interpret the information gathered (Karl & Mion, 2019). So it is important for students to understand the different methods. One example of evidence based practice that is used is timeouts. Timeouts have been used in many situations, but most often in the operating room. In a timeout everyone in the operating room stops what they are doing and verifies the patient, the procedure being done and any other important information to know before the procedure begins (Pellegrini, 2017). This has helped to reduce the amount of patients getting the wrong surgery and has also as an added bonus created enhanced performance of the surgical staff (Pellegrini, 2017). This is just one example of how evidenced based practice has helped to better patient care.

However, evidence based practice is not always easy to implement. One study of pharmacists in Saudi Arabia showed that they believe in research and evidence based practice, but they do not have faith in the employment of new practices (Sultana et al, 2017). In order for new research to be helpful to patient care it must be implemented well and staff need to believe they are doing what is best for their patient. So, if we know evidence based practice is best for the patient, how do we encourage staff to follow new guidelines?
