Dick and Jane primers

Examine the images for the Dick and Jane primers. What are the messages being sent about normative American society in the images and text of the primers? Turn to Morrison’s Prologue and think about how she playing with the narrative produced by these primers. Looking at pp. 33 to “…world a part of her” (48 upper), compare these two primers. How is Morrison reimagining the content and aesthetics of these children’s books? Reading on, especially into the next chapter, can you understand why Pecola wishes so desperately to be in what she perceives to be a perfect world, one she believes white people live in, or not?
