Article Scavenger Hunt:
One of the hardest tasks for many students is to appropriately discern which articles are research reports, which are integrative reviews, and which are theoretical based. In this exercise you will search for one article of each general type (research report, integrative review, and theoretically based) for your selected topic.
The goals of this project are to:
Assist you in understanding the differences between the general types of articles used in various research projects.
Provide you with experiences in how the general types of articles can be used in better understanding a chosen phenomenon.
Steps of the process:
Select a topic. .
Using an electronic database, conduct a search of your topic. In delineating the search, use of key words such as “research,” “integrative review,” and “theory” may help pull those types of articles. Many databases allow for limiting searches to these particular areas.
Review abstracts. Pull off or print appropriate articles. Label each article as to the type of article you believe it is.
Answer the questions listed below using short answers; no more than 1 page in length.
Questions to consider:
How difficult was it to find appropriate articles for each type or category?
What were some of the key words or phrases you used or looked for in helping you find these articles?
What are the differences between the various types of articles?
What are the similarities?
How has each type of article assisted you in understanding more about your selected phenomenon?
Some possible topics include:
Accurate temperature measurement in neonates
Pain assessment in the cognitively impaired
Use of research in nursing as a foundation for evidence-based practice
Childhood type 2 diabetes and obesity
Use of complementary and alternative therapies for control of menopausal symptoms

Your grade for this assignment is based on your ability to find the 3 different types of articles and completely answer the listed questions in the questions to consider section.
Each question is worth 4 points and there are 5 questions.
The point total for this assignment is 20 points.
