Please read Stephen Harper's [Prime Minister of Canada] Apology to the Native American students who attended Indian Residential Schools and post your response to the Apology in light of the information from Andrea Smith's chapter on "Boarding School Abuses and the Case for Reparations" in Conquest: Sexual Violence and American Indian Genocide. Please discuss your response to the apology to former students of Indian Residential Schools made by the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper on behalf of the Government of Canada by considering the following questions:
What do you think of this apology in light of what you have read in Andrea Smith's book, Conquest? Do you think the Government of the United States would make a similar apology? Why or Why not?
As Christians we understand the process of confession, repentance, asking for forgiveness, and restoration. Please identify where in his speech, Prime Minister Harper uses each of the parts of this process. In what parts of the speech does Harper make confession of the wrongs done? Where does he express repentance for the crimes committed against the aboriginal people of Canada? Does he ask for forgiveness? How? What does Harper include in his speech to demonstrate in concrete terms the Canadian Government's desire for restoration [for instance, the restoration of the acknowledgement by those with privilege and power that First People's are fully human and to forge a new [humane] relationship between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians of equality rather than oppression?
