HISTORY
For a 700-900 word essay tracing the development of American culture from the end of World War II through the 1960s, or from the 1960s to the 1970s and 80s.
American Culture in the 1950s and 1960s
Answer the following question: How did American culture change from the 1950s to the 1960s?
Include the following:
- What were the major characteristics of American society in the 1950s? What changes came about in the 1960s?
- Compare and contrast the youth rebellions of the 1950s and 1960s. How were they different? How were they similar? How successful were they in achieving their goals?
Sources:
- Include specific references to primary sources (like the songs and videos) in the assigned readings but keep quotations down to a minimum. - Besides the assigned readings in the homework folders, you should also make use of at least two outside sources. These sources cannot include textbooks or encyclopedias, hard copy or online.
In-text Citations and List of Sources
Include the following:
- In-text citations: When using specific information from a source include the author’s last name or title of the article in parentheses at the end of the sentence; i.e. (Zevin)
- List of sources: Make sure that you include all relevant bibliographical information in your list of sources: Author (last name first). “Title of article” (in quotation marks). Title of book or website(in italics). Date. URL (if from the internet).
Quotations: Use quotations only when it is important for the reader to see the exact words of one of your sources. In general, this means quoting only from primary sources. Use quotations to illustrate something that you have already explained in your own words. Do not use quotations to explain things for you. Quotations will not count toward to 400- to 600-word limit.
Avoid plagiarism. Use quotation marks when appropriate and include in-text citations whenever you are using information from one of your sources. In-text citations are NOT just for quotations.
Essay Format
Use the following standard format for your essays:
- Introduction
- general background on your topic
- statement of thesis – What is your main argument about the development of US culture during the time period covered by this essay?
- evidence – Discuss the evidence you plan to examine in order to prove your thesis
- Body Paragraphs – This is where you present the evidence proving your argument
- Topic Sentence – start each paragraph with a topic sentence explaining what the paragraph is about

III. Conclusion – sum up what you have done in the paper.
