Questions 1:
The influence of poverty affects individual health outcomes differently and independently at different phases of their life course”. Indeed, this is true and the social determinants of poverty and disparities of all kinds must be examined if a health promotion endeavor will be effective.
According to HealthyPeople.org (2019), some of those social determinants that are pertinent to your discussion include:
Safe housing and neighborhoods
Local food markets offering affordable, high-quality, nutritious foods
Access to high-quality and affordable health care
(para. 2)
With your focus on physical disabilities, do you believe generalist and primary care healthcare professionals are knowledgeable in the care and wellness needs of the disabled? As noted in determinant number three above, people with physical disabilities have a right to access to high-quality, well-informed, evidence-based care as well. There is little to no formal education for primary care providers in the unique needs and challenges disabled persons face. Even planning a wellness program, the needs of the disabled are not a significant consideration among healthcare professionals.
Do you believe, due to the increased numbers of those suffering from disabilities, there more formal training be offered in the professional schools of healthcare? Do you believe this must be addressed at the State or Federal level? Do you believe there should be special provisions in the Affordable Care Act to provide incentives to those who learn about and provide services for the disabled? What are your thoughts?
