Cinderella
Please analyze the representation of gender in “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “The Little Mermaid.” You should focus the bulk of the paper on ONE of the tales and use the other two to support your argument.
TOPIC: “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “The Little Mermaid” are often considered anti-feminist texts. “Little Red Riding” has been read as a tale about rape, the little mermaid is often seen as a character who sacrifices everything to win the prince while Cinderella is criticized because she suffers passively until the prince rescues her. Please explain whether you agree with this critique. Is there another way to read these tales? You may refer to recent adaptations of these stories, such as Anne Sexton’s fairy tale poems or Disney’s Little Mermaid, and discuss whether they are indeed more feminist than the tales by Andersen and the Brothers Grimm.
Please consult and cite the following four reading assignments: Lieberman, Zipes, “Reviewing & Re-Framing Little Red Riding Hood,” Lutz Röhrich, “Princesses and Mothers,” Laura Sells, “Where Do the Mermaids Stand” (in addition to the fairy tales themselves!).
Content: a convincing argument supported by relevant facts
Structure: logical, coherent organization of material (please note that we do not
require a “five-paragraph” essay. Use as many paragraphs as you need—within the page limit). Every paragraph should focus on one main idea or point and should advance your overall argument.
