Weekly Homework is worth 50% of your overall grade and will utilize Canvas’ ‘Discussions’ feature to generate intra-lab dialogue. This is a really exciting opportunity for us, as it allows us to share different perspectives and understandings of a wide array of artists, their art, and their practices.

Assignments Description:

Step 1: Choose an artist. We have compiled an Artist Research Resource Directory for you to pick from, which lists names and includes at least two links for each. If you desire, you are welcome to identify artists not included in the directory.

Step 2: Conduct research on the artist you selected. Your research may focus on biographical information, specific works of art, their practice overall, or an overlap of the three. Write a response to your research that is at least 500 words. While these responses are intended to be rooted in research, your writing isn’t required to be strictly formal. We are not grading for citation! However, be mindful to not blatantly plagiarize. If you do choose to directly quote or paraphrase from a source within your research response, please adequately attribute it to the author and the source you found it in. Include an analysis of your findings within your response. We want to hear what you think, do you find this work exciting? Is this artist’s practice problematic? Are you jazzed? Do you hate it? The tone of your responses should be conversational, as if you were presenting your findings to us in person. Include at least one image to help illustrate your response.

Step 3: Post your completed research response by copy-pasting your typed response directly into the ‘reply’ field of the appropriate Weekly Homework: Artist Research Week.

NOTE: If you want to choose an artist that has already been researched by another classmate, you are welcome to, just be sure to focus your research on a different point of interest.

Evaluation:

Min of 500 words – 1 point

Including the name of the artists, and the titles of any works discussed, within your response – 1 point

Include an analysis (tell us what has you jazzed, suspicious, critical, ect.) of your topic (the artist, their work, or their practice) – 2 point

Include at least 1 image that illustrates your research – 1 point

Total: 5 points
