Baseball Stats
Instructions
Please read the directions carefully and submit your answers as a Word or PDF document.
In the History of Baseball and Sabermetrics document on Blackboard, you were introduced to the
study of Sabermetrics. One interest of Sabermetricians is to find the best measures of hitting
performance. The book also elaborates on the topic of Sabermetrics in Chapter 1, explaining the
concept of runs created (RC) and on-base-percentage plus slugging (OBS). Your grade will be
based solely on quality, not quantity, but the typical length for the questions below are around ¼ to
½ of a page for each question.
– Explain the difference between RC and OBS. What are the differences in how they evaluate
offensive hitting performance?
– If you’re familiar with baseball, you are aware that batting average is the de facto
measurement of offensive performance. Create an argument as to why RC and OBS is better
at conveying the offensive performance of a batter than batting average.
