A masterpiece is a work that is considered extraordinary. Leonardo Da Vinci had the privilege of developing numerous masterpieces. Da Vinci embodied the true definition of a Renaissance man having knowledge in many different fields. He was an established artist and included his love and knowledge of science and nature in his works. Although the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper are probably his most valued pieces of art still studied today, Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man was one of his greatest achievements for science and art and is still used present day in anatomy books.
I feel people value these pieces of art today because of the workmanship poured in to them. Da Vinci was commissioned to paint a portrait of a Florentine merchants wife. He worked on the portrait for years however, it was never given to the merchant. Mona Lisa is considered one of the most famous paintings in the world. Predominantly due to her faint and mysterious smile. Da Vinci used several new techniques such as glazing on the Mona Lisa to give natural light. We see his knowledge of the human body in the construction of the nose and her natural smile.
Da Vinci’s work also elicited an emotional response from his audience. The Last Supper is another masterpiece of Da Vinci’s. This painting continues to be highly valued by society. Thousands visit the Last Supper every year. Christians feel a tremendous amount of emotion when gazing at this picture. I personally did not realize The Last Supper was so vast and I was astonished by the security and safekeeping surrounding the picture. Once again we see Da Vinci’s knowledge of the human body come through in the portrayal of the hands in the painting.
