Analyzing Gender in Mainstream Media

I would like you to write this essay on the play “A Streetcar Named Desire” and focus on the three main characters: Stella, Stanley, and Blanche and what they represent. With Blanche, I would like you to analyze how she is representing “abnormal” behavior when compared to other women, such as her sister Stella.

Analyze the gender constructs of one mainstream contemporary American narrative, explaining what characters and values are represented as ideal and why. Also be sure to demonstrate what constitutes abnormal behavior according to the ideology of the text (Blanche being an educated women), revealing how the plot functions to dictate normative social roles (Stella being compliant to Stanley and staying in an abusive relationship because she has nothing for herself), including those of sex, gender, sexual orientation, race, and class. Be sure to cite at least three readings and/or material from class lectures to ground your analysis.

MAKE SURE TO USE THREE READINGS TO HELP:
1. Not an Indian Tradition: the sexual colonization of native people
2. Dueling Dualisms
3. Scientific Racism and the emergence of the Homosexual Body
