Answer the essay question provided below with evidence from the contents of the textbook chapter titled Age of Empire – American Foreign Policy, 1890-1914.
Explain the economic, military and social reasons that made the United States become more involved overseas in the late 19th century (explain each of these categories separately). Explain how and why some Americans agreed with these reasons and how and why other Americans disagreed with them.
In this essay you are required to use at least one direct quotes from the chapter reading assigned, correctly cited. Essays that do not have at least one direct quote from the textbook chapter will be penalized. Students may simply cite by providing the name of the author, together with the page number, in parentheses.
While you must have at least one quote from the relevant textbook chapter to earn full credit for your essay, you can use more quotations, if you would like. Also, it is a good idea to have at least one citation at the end of every paragraph in your answer, even if there is no quote in that paragraph. Anytime you use any information from a source in a paragraph you need to have a citation somewhere in the paragraph showing where that information came from, even if it is not a direct quotation. Your essays will be graded on a 100 point scale.
