Adjusting to civilian life after leaving the military

A research question has three parts: 1) the topic, 2) the research question, and 3) the significance or rationale. The significance or rationale might be deeply personal, yet we are trained to write this part as something like “this research on ___ will help the field of ____ to ____.” That might be fine for publishing research on a new therapy for Alzheimer’s disease, but for the purposes of this class you should be forthcoming about the personal nature of your research. This does not mean that you won’t research and cite academic sources; it means that your subject, your reasons, even some of your evidence can, and should be, transparently personal.
Many times we see a disclosure in writing, such as “Full disclosure: I worked for this company from 2010-2013.” This tells the audience that the writer has a bias that they wish not to be called on later. In other words, they are being honest. You can work on more aesthetic ways to phrase the disclosure, and indeed maybe the entire essay will read like a disclosure. For now, just keep the idea of disclosure in mind.
Ask yourself what your research question is. Then ask yourself why you asked yourself that question. Be honest. You can find and provide facts and hard evidence while also being honest and deeply connected to the research

Subject: Adjusting to civilian life after leaving the military
Topic and research question: My personal research essay will examine the difficulties that U.S veterans face when they leave the military and will answer the question: What difficulties does a veteran face when they leave the service? I am interested in this topic because I left the U.S. Army in 2018 and had a hard time adjusting to civilian life. I struggled in finding a job, find a place to live, and go to school. I am hoping that this essay becomes a helpful tool or guide to other veterans who are struggling with establishing themselves in the civilian world and be successful.

4. This is a personal research essay. The point is to tell a personal story of how to adjust leaving the military and the struggles of finding a job, going to school, finding a place to live, being mentally stable, and succeeding in life. It needs to feel like a personal story is being told and the information is being backed up by research. In text citations need to be used often. Thank You.
