One can argue that language changes of certain kinds pose real challenges to both universal grammar and linguistic relativism. On the one hand, if all language are the same in fundamental ways, then conceivably any major change in one language could threaten this universalism. On the other hand, if each language is fundamentally different and affects how its speakers perceive and understand the world, then any major change in a language should mean a major change in the worldview of the speakers of that language, but is this what we see?
There are a number of different ways to approach(and answer) these answer these questions. For this assignment, use the evolution of grammatical gender in english language from old english to modern english as your case study and answer the follow questions
1) what do we mean by grammatical gender?
2) how and why did grammatical gender evolve from old english to middle english to modern english.
3) what implacation, if any, does this evolution have for the on-going debate between universal grammar and linguistic relativsm.
note that any essay needs to be unifed argunment, so mold all your answers into one argument. Be sure to organize your essay around a clear and precise thesis statement, and be sure that you provide adequate evidence to support your arguments.
