Monster

Instructions
Paper 1 prompt. Monsters have been with humankind from the very beginning – be they devils, demons, dragons, hydras, succubae, minitours, vampires, werewolves, or zombies (just to name a few of their many forms). The monster imaginary is found in every culture, on every continent, and in ever epoch of human existence. Given their ubiquity, it could be argued that monsters serve a fundamental purpose in human psychology. Indeed, monsters are good to think with – but why? Question: Why do we create monsters? This is to ask, why do we need monsters, and how would our understanding of ourselves and the world we occupy be incomplete without them? What do monsters DO for us – intellectually, spiritually, psychologically? What makes monsters so important?
