Contemporary health-related problem, issue, or phenomenon

For this assignment, you will first identify a contemporary health-related problem, issue, or phenomenon. It can be based on a broader issue that is unresolved. It can be an issue that you believe is overlooked and deserves more attention. It can be a global problem or a challenge unique to a particular culture or country. Aim for specificity in defining and contextualizing the problem, and consider its social, political, ethical, and/or cultural impacts.

Next, you will identify a non-specialist publication that publishes journalism, criticism, cultural commentary, or personal history (along the lines of The New Yorker/Harper’s/The Atlantic/NYTimes Magazine) and write your essay as if it were to be published for that particular type of outlet.

In a 1500-2000 word thesis-driven essay, follow the guidelines for the cultural critique:

Cultural Critique: A cultural critique should convey your unambiguous stance on an issue and should suggest a novel way of addressing the issue. In other words, you should propose an alternative approach or way of looking at a problem, drawing from a blend of evidence and experience. If you do not have direct personal experience with the issue, you may want to draw from other sources—in the form of research, statistics, expert opinions, interviews, podcasts, or other discourse—to present an intriguing theory or course of action that may be either unpopular, overlooked, or unexplored. You are in essence critiquing culture through the lens of your convictions
