INSTRUCTIONS:
This take-home portion is worth 80% of the midterm exam grade, and it is due in one week at the beginning of class. The other 20% of your midterm will consist of 10 multiple choice questions and will be given at the beginning of the next class.
Format:
Your take-home must be typed. It should be 4-5 pages in length. Page guidelines assume double-spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins. One staple in the upper left hand corner of your paper is preferred; do not put your exam in a plastic cover. Upload to Turnitin before class, then submit a hard copy in class.
No outside research should be used for this exam. No bibliography is required: the syllabus is your bibliography. The purpose is to show off what you have learned from lectures and readings in this class. No information should be copied from written sources. The paper must be written in your own words. Answers closely identical to that of your classmates will lose lots of points.

Write an essay in which you respond to the following questions on clusters.
- Why are clusters important? Consider the standpoint of both local governments and companies.
- Can decisions by government officials and company managers have some impact on the rise and fall of clusters? In what ways do the educational, socio-cultural, political, and economic environments influence these four determinants?
- Provide examples of clusters from Switzerland, Italy, and California. Discuss how the four determinants can interact to affect the strengthening of a cluster and the decline of a cluster.
