After the end of colonialism, newly independent governments across the global south were using progressive policies to build their economies and improve the lives of their citizens, with remarkable success. But this miracle came crashing to an end with the debt crisis of the 1980s. Washington leveraged the crisis to impose Structural Western access to Southern markets, labour and raw materials. Structural Adjustment contributed significantly to widening the income gap between the North and South
