Nirvana broke through in popularity during the 1990s, but the band, and its frontman Kurt Cobain especially, came of age during the 1980s. This collection of his journals stems mostly from that decade, well before the band received any sort of notice. It is therefore fair to think of Cobain and Nirvana’s music as a sort of commentary on or reaction against the 1980s. Cobain’s writing can be hard to follow and decipher, but take your time and read through them, keeping in mind the context of the 1980s.
Submit a brief response paper (about 500 words) answering the following questions.
What did Kurt Cobain and Nirvana represent? Can you identify any sort of political or social commentary in his writings? Or is he a self-absorbed, possibly disturbed individual with no connection to society? Or is he something in between? Explain your answer.
